Challenge: Although the focus on Early Childhood Education (ECE) has gained significant traction, several critical issues persist that undermine the quality of education at the preschool and elementary levels. One of the primary problems is the low capacity of teachers, which has significantly hampered the educational quality. This issue has led to delayed entry into grade 1, elevated repetition and dropout rates, diminished completion and transition rates, and poor learning outcomes overall.
Our Response: The significance of early childhood education is well-documented, with substantial research indicating that teacher capacity building is a highly effective strategy for addressing educational challenges and enhancing student outcomes. In light of these findings, Pharo Foundation has initiated a Teacher Capacity Building Pilot in 16 schools in Rwanda. This initiative seeks to improve educational quality by enhancing 172 teachers' and 48 school administrators’ capabilities to deliver comprehensive and engaging play-based learning experiences at the preschool and elementary levels.
Some of the activities in the Teacher Capacity Building Pilot include:
- Customized Continuous Teacher Training: This includes training on Learning Through Play (LTP).
- School-Based Coaching and Mentorship: Providing continuous support and guidance to teachers.
- Structured Follow-Up: Conducting lesson observations and co-teaching to ensure the application of training in real teaching situations.
Leadership Training and Community Engagement: Strengthening the school-community relationship and promoting innovative teaching approaches.
